Psychiatry
Health in Mind provides outpatient psychiatric assessment and treatment for adults in Claremont.
Our psychiatrists work across a range of mental health concerns and can provide psychiatric assessment, diagnostic clarification, treatment recommendations, medication management and ongoing psychiatric care.
Psychology and counselling are also available within Health in Mind where these may form part of a person’s broader care.

Specialist Psychiatry Services
Addiction Psychiatry
Health in Mind provides outpatient psychiatric assessment and treatment for adults with alcohol or other drug-related concerns, including co-occurring mental health conditions.
Assessment or treatment may be relevant for:
- Suspected or established substance use disorders requiring psychiatric input
- Co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns
- Diagnostic uncertainty where substance use may be contributing to symptoms
- Limited response to treatment or recurrent substance use concerns
- Medication review or management where substance use complicates treatment
Services may include addiction-focused psychiatric assessment, assessment of co-occurring psychiatric conditions, diagnostic formulation, treatment recommendations, medication management where appropriate and ongoing psychiatric follow-up.
Where relevant, Dr Vijay Ganasan can liaise with GPs, psychologists, alcohol and other drug services and other members of the treating team.

Adult ADHD Psychiatry
Health in Mind provides outpatient psychiatric assessment and treatment for adults with suspected or diagnosed ADHD.
Assessment or treatment may be relevant for:
- Suspected ADHD affecting work, study, relationships or day-to-day functioning
- Diagnostic uncertainty or possible overlap with other psychiatric conditions
- An existing ADHD diagnosis requiring psychiatric review or treatment
- Specialist medication assessment or management
- Limited response or adverse effects with current treatment
- Co-occurring mental health conditions affecting assessment or management
ADHD assessment may consider developmental history, current symptoms, functional impact and relevant co-occurring psychiatric conditions. Treatment may include recommendations, medication management where appropriate and ongoing psychiatric follow-up.

Perinatal Psychiatry
Health in Mind provides outpatient perinatal psychiatric assessment and treatment for adults planning a pregnancy, during pregnancy and through the postpartum period.
Assessment or treatment may be relevant for:
- Depression or anxiety during pregnancy or postpartum
- Changes or worsening of an existing mental health condition
- Bipolar disorder or other complex or recurrent psychiatric conditions
- Trauma-related symptoms or PTSD
- Preconception planning where there is a history of significant or recurrent mental illness
- Psychiatric medication review before conception, during pregnancy or while breastfeeding
Services may include perinatal psychiatric assessment, preconception review, medication management, ongoing psychiatric follow-up and psychotherapy where appropriate.
Where relevant, our psychiatrists can liaise with GPs, obstetric or maternity care providers, psychologists and other treating practitioners. Psychology and counselling are also available at Health in Mind for patients and partners.

Referrals & Appointments
For Patients and Families
A referral from a GP or another medical professional is required to see one of our psychiatrists. Once we receive your referral, our administration team will contact you directly to arrange your appointment.

For Referrers
Referrals can be submitted through our online Psychiatry Referral Form. Please include the presenting concerns, relevant psychiatric and medical history, current medications, previous treatment and other information relevant to the referral.
Once received, our administration team will contact the patient directly to arrange their appointment and advise them of the next steps.
Repeat Prescriptions & Script Requests
Please check your prescriptions before your Psychiatry appointment to ensure you have adequate repeats.
Where possible, request any required prescriptions during your appointment. Script requests made more than three weeks after your appointment may incur a fee.

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist?
Yes. A referral from your GP or another medical professional is required to see one of our psychiatrists.
What happens after my referral is submitted?
Once your referral has been received, our administration team will contact you directly to arrange your appointment. This process is consistent across the final referral flyers.
How long is a Psychiatry appointment?
Initial Psychiatry consultations are usually around 45 minutes. Follow-up appointments may be 15, 30 or 45 minutes, depending on the appointment required.
Can someone attend my appointment with me?
Psychiatry consultations are usually one-to-one, but you may choose to have a family member or another support person accompany you.
Does Health in Mind provide emergency mental health care?
No. Health in Mind does not provide emergency mental health services.
If immediate emergency support is required, call 000 or attend the nearest emergency department.
